A reproduction of a movable-type handpress taken from volume seven of Recueil de planches, sur les sciences, les arts libéraux, et les arts méchaniques, avec leur explication, one of the volumes of plates from the famous encyclopedia edited by Denis Diderot (Paris: Briasson [and Le Breton], 1769).

A reproduction of a rolling press taken from volume seven of Recueil de planches, sur les sciences, les arts libéraux, et les arts méchaniques, avec leur explication, one of the volumes of plates from the famous encyclopedia edited by Denis Diderot (Paris: Briasson [and Le Breton], 1769). This type of press is designed for use with copperplate engraving, an intaglio process in which the ink is stored in the grooves cut into the plate by a variety of means and is extracted by the considerable force applied by a rolling press onto dampened paper.
